Slow library system migration processes

Our library is migrating from Evergreen to Ex Libris Alma (not my choice). One thing that drives me up the wall is that their test load takes two weeks, and they're only doing one test load before production.

When I migrated us to Evergreen, we were doing test loads on at least a weekly basis for months, so that we could iterate towards perfection.

Why is their loading process so slow? It's 2020, damn it!

@dbs :( ugh, I'm sorry to hear that. That's how I met you all back in the day (virtually); the evergreen community while I was in grad school.

Slow library system migration processes

@Greg Huh! Now I'm trying to remember that (virtual) meeting. I'm feeling a bit embarrassed--I feel like I've just admired your work for always

Slow library system migration processes

@dbs yeah, meeting is a strong word. "Finding out about your work and maybe chatted indirectly" ;)

Slow library system migration processes

@dbs Oh Dan, things are only going to get worse I’m afraid.

@hugh !!!!

@dbs EL are the fourth library management system vendor I've worked with and definitely provide the worst service and the most unnecessarily fiddly yet still inflexible software.

Slow library system migration processes

@hugh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am even angrier now that our university librarian ignored the costs & benefits evaluation subcommittee that we struck and just went ahead and signed a migration contract.

It's only going to be a significant part of my work for the foreseeable future.

FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But thanks for validating my feelings of foreboding.
