library data standards

I thought I’d heard of all the possible abuses of MARC...and then I started working on the US national copyright system.

@bibliotechy lol, let me guess -- copyright records stored as concatenated MARC files? Also, say hi to dbrun for me.

@edsu how many different discrete pieces of info can we shove into a single subfield? The answer was apparently always “more”.
I actually haven’t had the pleasure of working with him yet. I’ve been on my little part of project and don’t get much chance to socialize with folks outside the team. Someday though.

@bibliotechy Do I even want to know?

@petrichor I mean, I don’t really want to know, but I also want a paycheck so.... :)
In short, shoving meta-FRBR data (legal docs about transfers of creative work rights) into marc by just shoving data wherever, multiple data points in a single subfield string l, ad hoc field mappings, and maybe documenting it. We’re transitioning it to a more appropriate system, but i still have to directly work with the old data now and then and “cannot unsee”
